Family Matters – Older Relatives

Looking after older relatives can sometimes be a problem. Have you considered having a relative come and live with you?

Maybe your mother or father is getting older and you are worried about their care and well-being. Perhaps they are  living in a property which is now too large for them. House work, cooking and cleaning, can over time all present increased problems for elderly people. When it’s your mother or father you want to do everything you can to make sure that their well-being is taking care of.

Many families in the UK now opt to move relatives in with them.  This provides peace of mind because you know that they are safe and will be looked after. It is a big decision. You must take into account the feelings of your partner and even your children. Moving a relative in to live with you can create strains in the family relationships. It requires a lot of thought and you need to feel certain that it is the best course of action.

Your relative also needs to feel very happy with the circumstances in which they will come to live with you. From their point of view it means they will have the company of family members and a lot more contact with their grandchildren. With the rising costs associated with care for the old, it can become an attractive proposition.

One of the acknowledged big political questions is how society pays fairly for caring for the older people in our communities. Having a relative come and live with you certainly solves that problem.

One thing is for sure. Your family will certainly feel closer and more of a knit unit. More like it was in times gone by when relaives living in close proximity was common and natural.
